LG is using an external server to store hashtags, so unless you know how to write server-side scripts we can't really reproduce it.

I guess you could request all of the recent topics' data and store them there, yes. But if you really want an accurate result you'll have to use a server.

I think that it can be develop with pseudo-database post and javascript/ajax. It must there is a js which grabs the hashtags from the post and put them into pseudo-database post.

I've been working with this topic database thing since the year started -- I started with the like system, which needs to be updated. At the moment I am working on updating the main database script, so probably after I finish that and the shoutbox, I'll work on the hashtag widget. I have an idea of what I can do to store the data;
Firstly send a request to the database to get the table for the hashtags, then loop over the posts. There's only two things you'd need :
1. Post ID
2. Tag content
The post ID would be used to prevent the tag from being added to the second column more than once. The tag content itself would be an array of tags that occurred in that post. We could also do it the other way around, have the tag in the first column and the second column would contain an array of post IDs. I actually think that would be easier to manage. The widget would need to send a request to the database to check the tags, so we could use localStorage to cache the results and prevent too many requests.
That's my thoughts at the moment.

I've had a little play around and it doesn't seem as if Forumotion have given any sort of way of doing this. I really thought the search feature could be utilised since it has the tag option, but apparently not.
